What the law says

Front side windows: minimum 35% VLT. Rear side and back windows: any darkness. Rear tint of any darkness requires exterior mirrors on both sides. Law change: Act 129 (May 2025) rewrote Hawaii's tint law — front sides now 35% (±6% tolerance) and windows behind the driver are exempt on all vehicle types. Mirrored, red, yellow, amber, and blue finishes are banned. Occupants must lower tinted windows during traffic stops. Fines: $300–550 (owner), $700–1,200 (installer).
