What the law says
Red light visible from directly in front is a Class 2 misdemeanor (§ 32-17-9, emergency vehicles excepted), and unauthorized use of a blue light is a Class 2 misdemeanor (§ 32-17-42). Up to three auxiliary driving lamps are allowed, front-mounted 12 to 24 inches up (§ 32-17-17), and any other lamp over 25 candlepower must not strike the road beyond 50 feet (§ 32-17-20). Chapter 32-17's old flashing-light sections were repealed in 1974, so flashing is not expressly addressed for ordinary vehicles.
