What the law says

The safety-inspection regulation settles this directly: 19VAC30-70-300 states that "Inspection of exhaust system does not concern noise level." Inspectors reject for leaks, repaired mufflers or catalytic converters, mashed or pinched tailpipes, loose or missing hangers, and discharge that is not directed to the rear or sides — never for volume. The earlier '85 dB at idle' figure shown here was unsupported.
